Reasons Why You Should Stop Eating Tilapia ASAP

Fish has been the healthiest source of protein for a long time now compared to other sources such as beef and pork. Fish contains lower cholesterol, fat, calories and at the same time filled with minerals, essential fatty acids, and vitamins which are vital for our body functions.

Nevertheless, Health experts are warning people to stay away from tilapia. The reason for this conflicting warning is that unfortunately, not all fish carry the same essential minerals required for our good health.

Fewer Nutrients

Tilapia contains fewer nutrients as compared to other fishes, as found by a research done by Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This study found that tilapia contains a lower amount of omega-3 fatty acid as compared to other fishes.

An omega-3 fatty acid is the most essential component in fish, and other types of fish contain a higher amount of this element than tilapia. The omega-3 fatty acid has medical benefits such as reducing significantly the risks of Alzheimer’s.

Could Cause Alzheimer’s

Tilapia, however, contains another element that is harmful to the human body – Omega-6 fatty acids. The high amount of this element in tilapia is why it is strongly advised to avoid it. In fact, tilapia contains a high amount of Omega-6 fatty acids than bacon and hamburger!

Instead of reducing the risks of Alzheimer’s, tilapia could actually increase the odds of you getting the disease. The omega-6 fatty acids in tilapia contain an element called arachidonic acid that increases significantly the inflammatory damages that precede Alzheimer’s.

This is only in tilapia, of course, you can eat as much mackerel, halibut, or hardiness as you can.

Most Tilapias are farmed

Tilapia is among the most commonly farmed fish in the world. This is due to their high demand and the fact that they can feed on virtually anything. While not all tilapia farmers are unscrupulous, there are few who don’t care to feed the fish the right amount or type of food. Instead, they will feed them the waste matter of pigs, chicken, and geese. To meet the market demand, farmers also tend to feed tilapias with antibiotics as well as genetically modify them to grow quickly.

Tilapia May Cause Cancer

The first reason why we eat fish or white meat is to avoid the risk of getting cancer. As it seems, eating tilapia can lead to cancer. This is not natural of course, but rather as a result of mismanaged tilapia farms that contain a high concentration of dioxin – a toxic element that is a carcinogen. When you consume the dioxin, it can take up to 11 years before they are completely flushed out.

Having said that, it is not a foregone conclusion that tilapia will cause your body problems, just those that are not bred well. If you want to eat tilapia, don’t be afraid to ask questions concerning where they come from. Tilapia is not just tilapia; ensure you eat fish that comes from fresh waters such as lakes or oceans and seas. You can still eat farmed tilapia if you are confident it was well reared.
